5 Nollywood films to see in cinemas this October

A faith-drama sequel, a Lagos epic, a Jim Iyke thriller and more: here’s what’s worth a ticket this month.

October is a busy month at Nigerian cinemas. Here are five films worth your ticket.

Agbara Nla: The Return

Directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua “JayMikee” Bamiloye, this faith-based drama revisits the spiritual battle from the 1993 original, with Mike Bamiloye back in the cast alongside Damilola Mike-Bamiloye, Joshua Bamiloye and Aanu Kolade. Expect themes of family and legacy, and plenty of nostalgia for fans of the original.

Black Market

Fatimah Binta Gimsay directs a thriller about survival, underground networks and economic pressure in the city. The cast includes Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Ibrahim Yekini (Itele), Taye Arimoro and Scarlet Gomez.

Star Lomo

Kayode Kasum’s comedy-drama follows an ambitious local figure navigating neighbourhood rivalries, starring Akinyoola “Kamo State” Ayoola, Ibrahim Chatta, Abiola Adebayo and Lateef Adedimeji.

King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos

A historical drama set in 19th-century Lagos, directed by Adebayo Tijani. Femi Adebayo plays Oba Kosoko, defending his sovereignty against outside pressure and rivals including Odunlade Adekola’s Oba Akintoye. Jide Kosoko, Gabriel Afolayan, Femi Branch and Tina Mba round out the cast.

No Fury (from 23 October)

Akay Mason’s psychological thriller stars Jim Iyke and Nse Ikpe-Etim as a seemingly perfect couple whose marriage unravels when a hidden betrayal comes to light. Lilian Esoro, Tina Mba and Prisca Okeke co-star.

Our pick

If you only see one, make it King Kosoko. Nollywood epics with this scale of cast don’t come around often.
