November featured hits from known names like Kiss Daniel, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi and gems from up comers like Santi, Kelsey Lu, Duendita, JPEGMAFIA and Future Generations to name a few.
Our contributors explained why they love some of their favourites song out in November.
One Ticket - Kiss Daniel & Davido
This is going to end up being one of the most popular songs of 2018 - just because KD doesn’t have a bad song. The noticeable element of this record is how the content is largely socially conscious in the minds of “lovers or would be lovers in question”. So, everybody relates to this record beneath its heavy drums and kicks and of course a melody to groove to. Davido performed one of his best guest verses on this record (probably the KD influence). - Fe
Supa Sigh - Bris B (feat. Santi)
My favourite LOS member, BrisB finally broke his lengthy silence with the release of Supa Sigh. It features the poster boy of the alte scene, Santi and basically this song ticks every box, it felt like christmas early on my first listen. Super talented producer Higo churns a dream of a beat for both Bris & Santi to rock. - Yinka
Brothers Keeper - Anderson .Paak (feat Pusha T)
Anderson .Paak released his sophomore project, Oxnard, and he enlists rap album of the year contender Pusha T on the 9th track of the project. The song is set to throbbing drums on the instrumental, Anderson deliver in his sing-rap style, and Pusha T saying “... but I’m still rapping about the you know” on his verse is the most evasive way of admitting his trademark drug-laden rap. If you know, you know. - Yinka
Due West - Kelsey Lu
I wonder why there are so many songs about California.
Kelsey Lu is a talented cellist, singer, producer and frequent Solange and Sampha collaborator. Her take on California is dreamy and her soulful performance of the song as well as the beautiful video (reminiscent of Solange work) explains her determination to get to California. - Iyin
Nobody like You - DAP The Contract (feat Mia Maxima, Lazy Rabbit & Aeti)
From time to time, there’s always that one song you play when life’s trying to get the best out of you e.g Lagos traffic mental torture. For me, this song is currently one of those songs. It’s by NY based Nigerian rapper-producer DAP The Contract, created to venerate his ride or die love interest but something about the way he repeatedly sings Nobody Like You over pop guitars & drums is soothing. - Yinka
Landscape - Future Generations
I love pure melodic indie bands. I'm always on the lookout for bands or artistes who approach music this way. Future Generations, the four piece band from NYC maintain the theme of happiness through out their new album, with the title track characterizing the band's endearing melodies and euphoric vibe.
Watch Future Generations perform Landscape for Paste Magazine. - Iyin
On the Low - Burna Boy
Burna Boy’s move to working with KelP has proved brilliant, as they have scored another hit record with On the Low. So many similarities about this track and Karolina by Awilo. But this record has its peculiarities, because of how it grasps the attention of its listeners with the signature percussion instruments on it. Already a fan favourite amongst music lovers as it has that key head bop & body movement attached to it. - Femi
Connect - Elohim
Electronic artiste Elohim dropped a synth-pop song (produced by Skrillex) detailing a connection between an alien and a human. As weird as that sounds, the song is totally amazing. Check out the cool video here: - Iyin
Sensima - Skiibii & Reekado Banks
An excellent record in all of its entirety by a recording musician who is often regarded as average. Also pointing out that this song has Mystro written all over it, so there’s no wrong in saying that Mystro shopped around his work to Skiibii, to enable the latter to score a hit. With the former having producer credits on it. The content of this record is one that gets the people going in its prehook, hook & verses, regardless of how questionable the lyrics might be. Already the perfect tune to feel good to during this festive period. - Femi
One - Tiwa Savage
One is a commendable effort from the usual Tiwa Savage material that we are used to. The song from start to finish is a relatable one, with the Yoruba victory proverbs in the chorus as well as the depth in the other parts of the song. A sing-along tune to layback to, and count one’s blessings as the year comes to an end. - Femi
Text me - T’neeya
Text me is a record from the relatively new flagship artist of the new era Aristokrats records, who hails from Cameroon. A sweet RnB tune written in both English, French & Patios. The soulful voice of T’neeya, brings that enjoyable presence to this good record and also the perfectly placed guitar strings that traps the minds of the listeners to engage the repetitive value of the song. - Femi
