The Greatest TV Villain ever

In the history of TV shows ( limited to both western tv and anime ) , there have been many great villains , Hannibal , the cunning manipulative cannibal psychologist. Joffrey Baratheon and Ramsay Snow, the sadistic and powerful sociopaths of Game of Thrones. The Governor of Walking Dead, Vern from Oz, Ma Soprano , L from Death Note, whoever you decided was the villain in Code Geass, Moriarty, The Gilead Government of Handmaid's Tale, Lorne Malvo of Fargo. So who among these despicable characters is the greatest TV villain of all time ? Many of them have their strengths and weaknesses, but in this I will strictly focus on their ability to succeed on their objectives.

BREAKING

We have a surprise last minute contender . The most successful TV villain ever is, wait for it....................

GOSSIP GIRL.

It's Gossip girl, the omniscient all controlling social prefect of the Manhattan young elite in Gossip Girl , revealing all juicy gist and what was what , who in this case more importantly is Dan Humphrey, her real identity.

Yes him. They were all dancing to Gossip Girl's tune , and by proxy Dan Humphrey. You see Dan was an outsider among the elite , even though he lived in a Manhattan loft with relative comfort , he still felt insecure among the trust fund babies and elite of Manhattan, and for a while it made him endearing , the audience could connect through him, and while he could be self-righteous and smug,he was still pretty like-able. Overtime he revealed in the end he was the same as the Manhattan elite he claimed to despise, constantly cheating on his partners and repeatedly betraying the trust of his friends who usually saw him as the angel of the group. Does that make Dan an awful person ? at times yes , but generally just human who is flawed. However Gossip Girl was a vicious blogger who terrified the Manhattan teenage elite , as a teenager social standing is everything . Gossip Girl probably caused mental trauma to all of them, peddling and spreading rumors they'd rather have kept secret, the power of the blog was in it's overwhelming popularity. Though at points it made sense for Dan to be Gossip Girl earlier in the show , as it went on and Gossip Girl did worse and worse things to Dan himself and his close friends , it made less and less sense.

Let's do a rundown of some of the worst things Gossip Girl did :

  • Started STD rumors about Serena, along with pregnancy rumors

  • Fallout of Gossip Girl, whenever something juicy dropped ,there was alwa

  • Posted Blair's Diary on Gossip Girl

  • Spread rumors about Jenny Humphrey's sex life, this for me is the worst , he put his poor sis through the blender multiple times as gossip girl , poor 15 year old jenny, the person she trusted the most , was in reality one of her tormentors.

Now as Dan, just as Dan Humphrey, he had his fair share of misdeeds, exposing all his best friend's secrets in a novel Inside, constantly cheating on significant others and betraying the trust of his friends and family.

So what happens we the two become one, we inadvertently have is a sick and twisted villain who did all these things for guess what, to win over Serena Van Der Woodsen , even though as Gossip Girl he constantly made her life hell as some of sort of weirs long twisted ploy to win her over. And guess what? IT WORKS!! He marries her after the reveal , keeps his inner circle mostly intact, HE WINS , and the general audience were in such a general shock at the reveal , and tired of the show most of us weren't fully able to absorb the implications. Dan Humphreys is a full blown sociopath. He wasn't the best written villain or the most compelling one, he doesn't even make a lot of sense, but why is he the greatest ? He got away with it , with the most of his victims not even treating him like a villain after the grand reveal despite all he had done. List all the great villains , all got their comeuppance to a degree , Dan ? Nope he got away with it , his friends ,family and audience all for the most part weren't incredibly shook , that might be in part due to poor writing and the audience wanting the show to be put out of it's misery by the reveal. You might say in reality Dan really didn't ruin their lives, they were for the most part teenagers during his reign and they all ended up fine and it doesn't compare to some of the vile things other tv baddies have done, it still doesn't excuse all the awful stuff he did, and no consequences for it ? Dan Humphrey is the most successful TV Villain in history.

Bonus

-The actor himself, Penn Badgley HATED his character, proper despises him.
