Queen Latifah - All Hail the Queen (1989)

Queen Latifah created heavy buzz with her 1988 debut single, Wrath of My Madness and reggae infused Princess of the Posse. Going on 19 at the time, she was a breath of fresh air on radio as she spread a message of positivity in her trademark upbeat attitude. She addresses sexism with razor sharp rhymes on feminist anthem Ladies First while Evil That Men Do is a duet with KRS-One that hits hard on black-on-black crime. All Hail the Queen was a befitting introduction for Latifah and it showed a glimpse of her enormous potential as a rapper and an all round entertainer.
Angélique Kidjo - Aye (1994)

Angelique Kidjo is an enigmatic character. She’s a Grammy award winning singer, actress and activist who is fluent in 5 languages: English, Fon, French, Gen & Yoruba. She sings in all 5 languages, occasionally including her personal (artistic) language. The Benenise singer is known for her creative music videos and has ben called “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine. Ayé was her sophomore album and it spawned an international hit, Agolo which was a dancehall essential in parts of the US and throughout Africa & Europe.
Adele - 21 (2011)

Composed in the aftermath of the singer's separation from her partner, she channeled her heartbreak & depression into creating this instant classic. Its classical arrangement and the minimal production of Rick Rubin & Paul Epworth, complemented by Ryan Tedder’s emotive songwriting gave Adele’s powerful voice room to shine. Global number one song Someone Like You is a song of self-liberation as she’s previously stated it’s personal song written to free herself. 21 was a strong exploration of heartbreak, forgiveness and introspection by Adele. The music on this album typifies the tradition of the confessional singer and its depth moved musicians and production team into tears during studio sessions. It went on to become: the best selling album of 2011 & 2012, the UK’s best selling album of the 21st century, the most certified album ever with over 400 certifications and it is ranked the Greatest Billboard 200 album of all time.
