Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster (2009)

Lady Gaga The Fame Monster appreciation, throwback

Lady Gaga’s artistic eccentricity is her star power.

On The Fame Monster; a double disc reissue of her 2008 debut album, The Fame, Lady Gaga showed her stylistic range by making edgy & darker music. The gothic themed cover artwork shot by French photographer Hedi Slimane drives home the concept of the album. In Gaga’s words, the album deals with the dark side of fame, and her aura and theatrics keeps things interesting as she uses her ear for club-ready, synthpop melodies to spawn essential records like Bad Romance & Alejandro on the first disc, and Just Dance, Poker Face & Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) on The Fame disc.

Rihanna - Loud (2010)

Rihanna Loud appreciation, throwback.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty is a metonym for pop icon. Since busting on the scene in May 2005 with debut single Pon de Replay she’s held it down almost like none other the 13 years that’s passed since then. She is a prolific entertainer who released a music project every year between 2005 & 2012. Loud is the fifth of eight studio albums to her name. The album differed from its predecessor, 2009’s Rated R which had a hostile & dark feel to it. Loud has more uptempo moments with sonics cut across R&B, electro, reggae and dancehall. The album is filled with addictive hooks, like on Drake featured What’s My Name?, the reggae infused Man Down & Only Girl (in the World) which earned her a Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

Preyé - Mortia (2015)

Preye Mortia appreciation, throwback

Preyé is a soul/R&B artiste from Nigeria blessed with a dulcet voice. In the spirit of familiarity, we schooled together and we been knew all along that she packed a powerful voice but she first caught public eye when she featured on two cuts (God of Self & Addicted) off rapper, Omari’s, No Man’s Sorrow mixtape in 2015. Produced by Tay Iwar, Mortia is Preyé’s debut single and it’s a song about death laden with emotions delivered with shiny & breathy high pitched vocals. Since then she’s collaborated with names like Major Distraction, Lady Donli, Davina Oriakhi, DJ Yin & Bankyondbeatz.
